Set in Sydney in the summer of 1959, Ladies in Black is a coming-of-age story set against a backdrop of Australia’s cultural awakening, the increasing liberation of women, and the breaking down of class structures. Schoolgirl Lisa takes a summer job in a department store while awaiting the results of her final high school exams and dreaming of going to Sydney University. The other saleswomen open her eyes to a world beyond her sheltered suburban existence and nurture her transformation.

Screenplay by Sue Milliken, based on the popular novel by Madeleine St John, The Women in Black. With a talented cast including Angourie Rice, Rachel Taylor, Julia Ormond, Alison McGirr, Susie Porter and Noni Hazelhurst.

Ladies in Black, is the third of three films in an anthology of work from legendary award-winning Australian director Bruce Beresford, along with Breaker Morant and Paradise Road.

Bruce Beresford joined the Veterans Film Festival in 2022 as the chair of the Jury for Best Film and presented a Masterclass following the screening of Ladies in Black, where he unpacked his career highlights and shared some of the secrets behind his extraordinary career.
