Dr Mike Kelly AM MP (BA LLB, PhD)
Mike joined the Army in 1987 and has extensive military experience including serving in a number of international operational deployments. He was awarded the Chief of the General Staff Commendation in 1993 and made a Member of the Order of Australia in 1994 and seconded to the International Committee of the Red Cross in Bosnia Herzegovina and Croatia. Mike was part of a successful hostage recovery mission to Kenya and a member of the UN Peacekeeping Force in East Timor, where he was awarded the Force Commander’s Commendation. He also served with the Coalition Provisional Authority in Iraq from 2003 to 2004.
In 2006, Mike was involved in the management of the response to crises in Timor Leste and Lebanon in his last full posting with the Army before finishing his career with the rank of Colonel as Director of Army Legal Services in 2007.
Mike was the Member for Eden Monaro from November 2007 to September 2013. During his time as a Member of Parliament Mike served the Government as Parliamentary Secretary for Defence Support in 2007. He served as Parliamentary Secretary for Water and Parliamentary Secretary for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry in 2010 before moving to Parliamentary Secretary for Defence. In 2013 Mike was appointed Minister for Defence Materiel.
In 2013, Mike lost the seat of Eden-Monaro by less than 900 votes and was re-elected July 2016 with a 6% swing which broke Australia’s longest bellwether seat – that is, Mike is the first person to win the seat of Eden-Monaro without being a member of the party that formed government since 1969.
